Finding a high chair can be overwhelming- there are models in every size, configuration, and price that you can imagine. When your baby is ready to start solid foods, understand that there is no such thing as a perfect high chair. Use this guide to help find a chair that will work for your family’s needs.

The Basics- Focus on Fit

Eating is an exciting time for your baby, full of new textures, smells, sights, tastes, and sounds. Babies are also developing new motor skills as they use their arms, hands, fingers, tongue, and lips to explore food. In order for the brain to focus on the adventure of eating, it can’t focus on helping your baby stay seated. While your child should have good head control and be able to sit briefly unsupported before starting solids, they will still benefit from a well-fitted seat. Consider how much more comfortable you are while seated in a dining chair versus perched on a bar stool. We recommend looking for high chairs with the following characteristics to give your baby adequate support and a comfortable seat:

  1. An adjustable backrest- the back of the chair should recline at various angles.
  2. An adjustable foot rest- the foot rest should move up and down so that your child’s feet are supported as they grow. Please note that many models on the market today include non-adjustable foot rests which will be fine for most children.
  3. An adjustable tray- the tray should move in and out to make sure food is never out of reach and accommodate for a growing belly

Some examples of highly adjustable and supportive high chairs are the Graco DuoDiner DLX, Baby Trend Everlast, and Ingenuity Proper Positioner*

The Extras- Special Considerations

Families have varying priorities when purchasing a high chair. You may want to consider the following:

  1. Cleaning- If your family doesn’t have a washing machine at home, a smooth, wipeable seat will be significantly easier to keep clean than a fabric-covered cushion seat. Examples include the Chicco Zest and Skip Hop EON*
  2. Portability- If your family enjoys eating outside the house (i.e. at the park, the beach, or restaurants), a lightweight folding high chair or clip-on seat may be useful.

Examples include the Summer by Bright Starts Pop ‘N Sit and Chicco FastLock Hook-on-Chair*

  1. Floor Space- Many high chairs have a wide base that can block walkways in small spaces and provide a tripping hazard for older family members. Consider a highchair that folds or can be mounted onto a standard dining chair.

Examples include the Cosco Kids Simple Fold and Chicco Snack Booster Seat*

Whether you are prioritizing adjustability, cleanliness, portability, or space-saving, you can find a high chair that works for your family. Our therapists may recommend models with specific features for children who require extra support around feeding.
